What Should We Do?

Reading: Luke 3; Proverbs 8 10 The crowds asked, “What should we do?” 11 John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.” 12 Even corrupt tax collectors came to be baptized and asked, “Teacher, what should we do?” 13 He replied, “Collect no more taxes than the government requires.” 14 “What should we do?” asked some soldiers. John replied, “Don’t extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay.” (Luke 3:10-14 NLT) John was preaching the Good News of God’s Kingdom Come. His message was challenging and even confrontational. There was a quality in John’s message that made open-hearted people realize that things had to change—hearing John preach wasn’t enough—action was required! God was not merely interested in whether the people had the right genealogy, belonged to the right group, or had the right doctrines. He was interested in generosity, honesty, and how they exercised power over others. He wanted them to be less selfish and to share what they had with those in need. He wanted those in business and those who handled money to be fair and honest. Those with power should not abuse or take advantage of others. God’s message to me today won’t be merely informational. It won’t be merely about identifying with the right group or having the right doctrines. When God speaks to me, his intent is that I do something, that I act on what he has said. Just like those who heard John’s Kingdom message with open hearts, I must ask, “What should I do?” Are you willing to ask the “What should I do?” question today and each time you hear God’s Word to you? Prayer: Father, Thank you that you are still speaking to us about your Kingdom Come. As this new year begins, I commit to listen daily for your message to me as I read and process your word. Please speak to me as clearly as you need to and as gently as you can as I purpose to apply the “What should I do?” question to each thing you say to me. Amen.
