What Can I Say?
Reading: 2 Samuel 7; 1 Chronicles 17; Psalm 2; Matthew 20
18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and prayed, “Who am I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 20 What more can I say to you? You know what your servant is really like, Sovereign Lord. 21 Because of your promise and according to your will, you have done all these great things and have made them known to your servant.” (2 Samuel 7:18, 20-21 NLT)
David’s kingdom was firmly established. His enemies were defeated, his neighbors were at peace with him, his city was secure, his palace was completed. The Ark of God’s Presence was at rest in the Tabernacle just down the street, with worship happening twenty four hours a day, seven days a week!
David was completely overwhelmed with God’s grace and goodness to him. In this prayer of praise, David acknowledged that he was blessed not because of what he had done or who he was, but because of who God is and because God is so good!
I’m in a great season of life, a season begun with the realization over the past few years that God loves me unconditionally, just as a Father loves his son. I know, you’re thinking, “Hey, I’ve known that all along! What took you so long to catch on?” Well, I’ve known it intellectually, but I’m only recently beginning to joyfully and thankfully grasp the reality that God loves me not because I am good, but because he is good. And I’m realizing that he loves me just as I am, not as I should be—because I’ll never be just as I should be!
I hope this realization is dawning in your own heart! I hope your relationship with God is becoming more and more that of a fully-trusting child with an unconditionally-loving Father—a Father who loves us because of his goodness, not ours.
Prayer:
Father, What can I say? Thank you that your love for me and my friends depends not on our goodness but on your goodness. Thanks that your blessing is not because of who we are, but who you are! Thanks for your goodness and faithfulness, and for loving us and letting us in on the blessing that flows from your heart. Amen.
