Time Is Running Out
Scripture: Romans 13
Another reason for right living is that you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for the coming of our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. (Romans 13:11 NLT)
Time is running out! I’m more conscious of the ticking clock with every passing year of my life. The years are like months, the months are like weeks, the weeks are like days, and the clock just keeps ticking!
When I was a kid, it seemed like there were many instances in which time dragged on very, very slowly: the last few days of school in early summer, watching the clock in the classroom slowly tick off the minutes to the end of the school day, the countdown to family trips in the car, the days before Christmas each year.
In this season of my life, the pace seems to have quickened considerably! About the only situation in which it seems like time is dragging slowly is when I’m in my car, sitting at the intersection of Purcell and Neff, waiting for the light to change from red to green!
Paul said, “The clock is ticking. Time is running out. Our brief time on earth will soon be over and eternity will be long!” Actually, clocks didn’t tick in Paul’s day, but the sand in the hourglass and the sundial’s shadow moved pretty rapidly!
Paul gives four core reasons for right living in Romans 13:
- To keep from being punished for wrong doing.
- To keep a clear conscience.
- To live a life motivated by love.
- Because Time is Running Out!
These are all good reasons to do the right thing. The last reason Paul gives is worth your consideration today. Time is Running Out!
- Life will soon be over and eternity will never be over.
- Jesus will return just as he promised.
- Godliness will be eternally rewarded and wrongdoing will exact its penalty.
Prayer:
Father, I purpose to do my best to do the right thing! Help me overcome the temptations that pull at me to take the easy way, the lazy way, the selfish way. I will live for you, and live for your purpose, and live for others. Time is Running Out! Amen!
