Through God’s Son
Scripture: Hebrews 1
1 Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. 2 And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. 3 The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. (Hebrews 1:1-3 NLT)
The unmissable message of the New Testament is the supremacy of Jesus the Christ, the Son of God! Paul strongly emphasizes Christ’s supremacy, especially in Ephesians and Colossians. Paul sums up the supremacy of Christ in these words:
15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, 16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. 17 He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. (Colossians 1:15-17 NLT)
The Hebrews author tells us:
- After all is said and done, God has given us the final message through his Son.
- The Son, Jesus Christ, radiates God’s glory and fully expresses the character of God.
- Jesus Christ sustains all creation by his power and authority and command, and is seated in the position of honor at the right hand of the majestic God.
- So listen to Jesus Christ the Son!
Another way of saying it is this:
- If what you hear isn’t consistent with the message of Jesus Christ in the Gospels, it isn’t the truest word of God!
- If what you hear about God isn’t consistent with the nature and character of God as revealed in the face of Jesus Christ the Son, it’s an inaccurate picture of God.
Prayer:
Father, There are so many “theologies” and ideas about you and what you’re really like! Please help my friends and I to hear your heart through the words of your Son, Jesus, and to form our picture of you through the face of your Son, Jesus. For Christ’s Sake!
