No Evil Will Conquer You – Ps 91 Part 3
Scripture: Psalm 91 (Click Link)
9 If you make the LORD your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, 10 no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. 11 For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. 12 They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. 13 You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! (Psalm 91:9-13 NLT)
“If you make the Lord your refuge.” The things we’ve been looking at so far in Psalm 91 have mostly had to do with dangers that can come our way. These things: dangerous pitfalls and deadly disease, natural disasters and attacks by enemies are things that we certainly wouldn’t intentionally seek out and choose to face (unless we’re contestants on Fear Factor). These are the uncertainties, the surprises, the shockers. These are the dangers of life, circumstances and events outside our control. They usually come upon us unannounced, without warning, and the only choice we have in the matter is how we react or respond going forward.
The Psalmist begins his poem with the words “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” He continues in verse 9, “If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter…” We don’t get to choose the challenge or the crisis or the attack or the illness or the storm or the earthquake. We do get to choose our refuge and our shelter! This is not allowing the storm to beat us down or the earthquake to shatter our lives while we passively lie there broken and beaten. This is actively “making the Lord our refuge” and “making the Most High our shelter.”
This is the humble response of faith and trust in the mercies of a God who is loving and caring and faithful and caring!
- Life has its Fear Factors.
- Life has its Uncertainty Factors.
- Life has its Disappointment Factors.
In the midst of it all, this is the point at which we choose to make God our refuge in time of need! Under God’s care, we will not be overcome!
Prayer:
Father, We make you our refuge and shelter. Uncertainty and Disappointment will not conquer or overcome us. We will counter the uncertainties, questions and fears with your faithful promises and trust in your steadfast love. We trust in you. In Jesus’ Name!
